CAMPAT Machine Tool, Inc. Introduces the 5-Axis Leadwell V-40iT Vertical Machining Center

Plano, Texas – CAMPAT Machine Tool, Inc. introduces the Leadwell V-40i Trunnion CNC Vertical Machining Center, a fresh take on the V-40’s 2010 ground-up redesign of a time tested Leadwell mill design. This new 5-axis model features a 13.8 inch (350mm) diameter integrated Tilting Rotary Table that holds a load of up to 440 lbs. from 0 – 45 degrees and 200 lbs. in the 60 – 90 degree tilted range. The tabletop surface is precision ground with (12mm) T-slots. The distance from the rotary tabletop to the spindle nose is 21.1 inches, and the spindle center to column is a healthy 25 inches. These provide a large work envelope for simultaneous multisided machining.
Inspired by CAMPAT’s Design and Engineering Group, the V-40iT model was specifically designed for the U.S.marketplace to cater to the needs of today’s precision metal-cutting professionals. “Leadwell engineering is open to all of our suggestions and has done an exceptional job creating the 5-Axis vertical mill we need. Leadwell uses only top quality well-ribbed construction, and with an additional 2000 lbs. added to the base casting this new V-40iT is stronger and beefier than others in its class and are ruggedly constructed for superior stability and machining accuracy. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used on each new casting design to determine the size and location of all internal ribs ensuring high torsional stiffness resulting in minimum vibration. Along with this enhanced base is a larger column featuring a heavier bottom section for increased stability and rigidity. The cast iron base, column and tables have over 10 times the dampening capacity of those made from steel, resulting in superior cutting performance. The column was redesigned, lengthened, and allowed to accommodate the 2 axis Parkson ® Tilting Rotary Table and not loose valuable Z axis travel for work holding or tooling.
The V-40iT features a 40 inch X-axis and 25 inch Y-axis travel with 21 inch Z-axis travel with rapids in X, Y, & Z axis at 1,417 IPM. The V-40iT employs cross-roller linear guide ways on these axis and features zero clearance and fully loaded carrying capacity in all directions. The extremely rigid base and column works in concert with these guides to provide outstanding stability for precision turning, heavy material removal and excellent work piece accuracy. The C Axis rotation speed is up to 22.2 RPM with the A axis (tilting), coming in at 13.3 RPM. Max cutting feed rate is an impressive 800 IPM. Leadwell uses only premium quality ground and pre-tensioned double nut ball screws on all axes. This maintains the dimensional accuracies necessary for 5 axis machining.
Leadwell uses a stringent Ball Bar Testing system that checks not only linear accuracy but also machine geometry. These tests insure that each machine meets the highest three-dimensional squareness and accuracy requirements. The machine is laser calibrated for full travel accuracy. It is affordable, flexible and features exceptional quality and high-efficiency with rapid traverse and rigid tapping. Glass scales can be added to all 5-axis to ensure even greater accuracy and repeatability.
The V-40iT utilizes a heavy-duty FANUC 12,000 rpm dual wound spindle motor that produces a stout 30 HP for high torque machining, helping to ensure consistent clean cuts. An optional 15,000 rpm direct drive spindle is also offered. These one-piece cartridge type spindles are built with high precision ceramic/steel hybrid bearings and ensure precise alignment for smooth run-out free operation. Spindles are Royal® cartridge type with oversizeBellevillewashers supplying high retention force to hold tools in place, reducing chatter and increasing accuracy as well as tool life. The #40 Taper I.D. grind is the type “Dual Contact” as an added bonus. These spindles utilize (6) High Precision Angular Contact bearings that allow for heavy cutting and help create a superior part finish. A highly accurate draw bar mechanism and a large diameter quill combine for high rigidity in the spindle. Coolant Through Spindle (CTS) preparation, is standard on the V-40iT with the ability to handle up to 1,000psi high pressure coolant systems. Leadwell spindles by Royal® can accommodate BT-40 or Cat-40 tool holders and dual contact tool holders.
All of Leadwell products are standardized with Fanuc controls, and the V-40iT is no exception. It features the Fanuc OiMD control with a large 10” LCD and comes standard with 20 or 40 Block Look Ahead with the Fanuc 30iA5 offered as a high performance option. The V-40iT can also be built using high end Heidenhain or Siemens 5 axis controls as well. In the standard configuration the V-40iT is equipped with a high-speed 24 tool arm style automatic tool changer with a maximum tool diameter of 4.3 inches without adjacent tools. A 30 and 40 tool ATC are also options.
Leadwell’s simple and efficient base design flushes chips effortlessly by using coolant wash down and dual screw-type chip augers inside the machine for easy chip disposal. Outside of the V-40iT the front type chip conveyor provides high volume chip removal to a barrel high exit. This V-40iT is finished off with full enclosure guarding and a complete ergonomic flat back design. The V-40iT is engineered and built for increased speed, precision and enhanced flexibility.
